August 2026: What's Happening at Virginia Horse Shows This Month

· EditorSeason Previews

Fourteen events on the calendar for August, spread from Danville to Chesapeake — though if there's one venue to know by name this month, it's the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington. Eight of the fourteen happen there.

August at a Glance

Aug 1–2 — Danville Open Western Horse Show. Western classes at the Danville Fairgrounds, kicking off the month down in Southside.

Aug 5–9 — Lexington National Horse Show A: Festival of Champions. Hunter/jumper at the Virginia Horse Center. Five days, so plan accordingly if you're going.

Aug 8–9 — Southwest Virginia Barrel Blast. Barrel racing in Wytheville.

Aug 8 — Rockbridge Community Horse Show. One day, multi-discipline, also at the Horse Center.

Aug 14–16 — Virginia Classic Paint Horse Show and the NBHA Colonial Nationals (barrel racing championship) run the same weekend, both at the Horse Center.

Aug 15–16 — Bristol Virginia Rodeo. Western, at the Bristol, Virginia, Arena — a change of pace if you're not in Lexington that weekend.

Aug 16 — Thoroughbred Heritage Horse Show. Breed show, Horse Center.

Aug 18–19 — Prince William County Fair Horse Show. Multi-discipline, up in Manassas.

Aug 19–20 — Virginia Classic Open Dressage. Horse Center again.

Aug 20–23 — Sallie B. Wheeler / Virginia Young Horse Show. Hunter/jumper, four days, Horse Center.

Aug 22–23 — Tidewater Barrel Racing Championship. Down in Chesapeake, if Southside Virginia is more your territory than the Valley.

Aug 28–30 — Virginia Quarter Horse Championship Show and the House Mountain Horse Show close out the month, both at the Horse Center, back to back.

Every listing links out to the organizer's page for entry details and exact times — check before you drive, since those can shift. The full calendar has everything past August, too, and Barn Buddy will answer questions about any of it if you'd rather ask.
