This Weekend in Virginia Horse Country (September 18–20, 2026)

Competitors in the ring at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, Virginia

It's a full house across the Commonwealth this weekend, with the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington alone running three shows at once.

Weekend highlights

The Virginia Dressage Festival takes over one of the Horse Center's rings September 18–20, drawing riders from across the region for a full weekend of tests at every level. Right next door, the VA State Barrel Show Finals brings the speed and dust, capping off the season for Virginia's barrel racers.

In Upperville, the Middleburg Classic Horse Show at Grafton Farm wraps up its multi-day run on Sunday — a good excuse for a drive through the Piedmont hunt country if you haven't been out that way this fall.

Polo fans should head to Great Meadow in The Plains for the Cloverleaf Polo Classic on Saturday, one of the bigger matches on Great Meadow's fall calendar.

And down in Southwest Virginia, the Roanoke Valley Horse Show at Salem Civic Center Arena runs Saturday and Sunday with a mixed-discipline lineup — a solid pick if you're closer to the Blue Ridge than to Lexington.

That's on top of a long list of smaller hunter/jumper and dressage schooling shows happening at farms across the state — check the full events calendar for anything near you.

Looking ahead

The American Saddlebred Horse Association of Virginia Horse Show settles in at the Virginia Horse Center September 23–26 for four days of saddlebred competition. The following weekend, Old Tavern Horse Trials returns to Great Meadow September 26–27 for a full slate of eventing, and Roseland Polo continues its Sunday matches at King Family Vineyards in Crozet.

Further out, mark your calendar for the Foxfield Fall Races in Charlottesville on October 4 — always one of the best-attended days on the fall steeplechase circuit.

Whatever discipline you follow, there's no shortage of reasons to get out to a barn or a rail this weekend.
