It's a packed mid-October weekend across the state, with steeplechase, a breed show, combined driving, eventing, and polo all sharing the calendar — then plenty more worth marking down before Halloween.
The marquee event is the Virginia Fall Races on Saturday at Glenwood Park in Middleburg, where field after field of steeplechase and flat racing draws tailgaters and rail-side crowds to the Piedmont for the day.
Over in the Shenandoah Valley, the Friesian Grand Nationals wraps up its run at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington Friday through Saturday — a rare chance to see the breed's signature high-stepping gaits and black coats in one place. The Horse Center is also hosting the Virginia Horse Center Combined Driving Event Friday through Sunday, for anyone who wants to watch horses and carriages navigate cones and water hazards at speed.
Up in Leesburg, the Morven Park Fall Horse Trials at Morven Park International Equestrian Center run through the weekend, with dressage, cross-country, and show jumping tests across the levels.
And for a lower-key Sunday, the Commander In Chief Polo Tournament at Great Meadow in The Plains is a good excuse for a picnic blanket and an afternoon of chukkers.
Looking ahead
The following two weeks bring a few events worth circling on the calendar. The JM Equine Barrel Race comes to the Virginia Horse Center October 16–18, followed the next weekend by a busy stretch at the same grounds: the Goose Creek Hunter Jumper Horse Show and the UDJC Dressage and Jumping Show, both October 17–18.
Western riders should note the Rassawek Professional Rodeo at Rassawek Vineyard in Columbia, also October 17–18.
The Horse Center then closes out the month with its multi-day Virginia Horse Center Fall Classic, running October 21–25. And on October 24, the International Gold Cup Steeplechase returns to Great Meadow — one of the biggest dates on the Virginia steeplechase calendar, so plan ahead if you're heading out.
