This Weekend in Virginia Horse Country (October 16–18, 2026)

Two polo players on horseback contest the ball at Roseland Polo, King Family Vineyards in Crozet, as spectators watch from a picnic blanket with the Blue Ridge Mountains behind.

It's one of the busiest weekends of the fall at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington, where the JM Equine Barrel Race runs Friday through Sunday alongside the Goose Creek Hunter Jumper Horse Show on Saturday and the UDJC Dressage and Jumping Show Saturday and Sunday — barrel racing, hunters, dressage, and jumping all sharing the same grounds.

Western fans have another option in Central Virginia, where the Rassawek Professional Rodeo comes to Rassawek Vineyard in Columbia Saturday and Sunday for bull riding, barrel racing, and the rest of a full rodeo card.

Up in Northern Virginia, Great Meadow in The Plains hosts its regular Saturday Polo match alongside a two-day Hunter Clinic running Saturday into Sunday.

For a Sunday outing, Roseland Polo at King Family Vineyards in Crozet is the classic pairing of chukkers and a picnic blanket against the Blue Ridge backdrop.

And out in the Piedmont, the Rappahannock Hunt Fall Hunter Pace at Pine Rock in Reva offers a lower-key Sunday for anyone who'd rather be in the saddle than in the stands.

Looking ahead

The next two weeks bring some of the fall's biggest dates. The Virginia Horse Center Fall Classic runs October 21–25 in Lexington, and on October 24 the International Gold Cup Steeplechase returns to Great Meadow — one of the marquee events on the Virginia steeplechase calendar.

Also on October 25, the Oakdale Halloween HT, CT & Dressage Show brings a seasonal twist to Oakdale Equestrian Center in Powhatan.

Then, closing out the month, the VHSA Championship Finals take over the Horse Center October 30 through November 1, with the Fredericksburg Hunter Pace at Lake of the Woods rounding out Halloween weekend on October 31.
