Chincoteague Island is a barrier-island town in Accomack County on Virginia's Eastern Shore, best known as the gateway to Assateague Island and the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, and as home of the famous annual Chincoteague Pony Swim and Auction organized each July by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company. It is a public tourist destination with no dedicated equestrian facility of its own; horseback riding in the area occurs informally along the beach or through nearby private outfitters.
