It's a big weekend for Virginia's fall calendar, with steeplechase, dressage, hunter/jumper, and even a cross-country masterclass all sharing the same few days.
The marquee event is the Foxfield Fall Races on Sunday at Foxfield Racing Association in Charlottesville — Central Virginia's classic afternoon of steeplechasing, tailgates, and Blue Ridge views.
Dressage riders should head to the Virginia Dressage Association Show, running Thursday through Sunday at the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington.
Over in the Piedmont, Beverly Equestrian in The Plains hosts the Beverly Fall Classic (USEF) Saturday and Sunday, drawing a strong hunter/jumper field.
Eventers won't want to miss the Lucinda Green Cross-Country Masterclass Clinic at Win Green Farm in Rhoadesville, a rare chance to audit a session with one of the sport's best-known names.
And if polo is more your pace, Great Meadow in The Plains has Saturday matches on the calendar all weekend.
Rounding things out, endurance riders are covering ground at the Shenandoah Endurance Classic at Camp Roosevelt in Edinburg, and hunter/jumper barns from Manakin-Sabot to Keswick have local shows running throughout the weekend as well.
Looking ahead
The next two weeks bring some of the fall season's biggest draws. The Morven Park Fall Horse Trials runs October 7–11 at Morven Park International Equestrian Center in Leesburg, and the Virginia Horse Center in Lexington stays busy with the Friesian Grand Nationals (Oct 8–10) and a Combined Driving Event (Oct 9–11).
Steeplechase fans get a second helping with the Virginia Fall Races on October 10 at Glenwood Park in Middleburg, and trail riders can look ahead to the Appomattox Heritage Trail Ride, October 17–18 near Appomattox Court House.
